Some Information Regarding Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia Nut (Mac nuts) came to Hawaii in the 1880s from Australia but became popular for income in the early 1920s when they began selling as a commercial product. Prior to this, they were used for ornamental and windbreak purposes. Yet, it was in the 1950s that the mac nuts took off as an income-producing crop for Hawaii.
Fortunately, Mac nuts were well established when both the sugar and pineapple industries fell apart due to the cost of production in Hawaii versus other countries. Mac nuts are mainly grown on the Big Island and cover over 20,000 acres total from the many farms! One tree can produce approximately 60 pounds of mac nuts per year when mature, at about 12-15 years.
The Nuts are rarely useful in a shell, as it takes around 300 pounds per square inch of pressure to crack them. Macaws have been known to crack these hard nuts! There are many ways given on the internet on what to use if you are not a producer with machinery and just have a small amount of mac nuts in their shells in your possession.
